Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN), has mentioned the Unbiased Nationwide Electoral Fee (INEC) can’t lengthen the tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari past the statutory 2023 even when elections don’t maintain within the South-East area.

Adegboruwa mentioned on Sunday that the warnings issued by INEC to arsonists burning its workplaces within the South-East shouldn’t translate into threats that the present authorities’s tenure might be prolonged if elections fail to carry within the South-East.

In a launch, the human rights lawyer added that the state of affairs within the North-East was worse in 2015 when the nation held elections that introduced in Buhari.

He mentioned, “We’re a nation ruled by regulation and an important one is the structure. The tenure of the present President can’t be prolonged by one second; whether or not Nigeria burns or rain or brimstones fall from heaven. So long as we’re nonetheless working this structure, the tenure of this president is predictable, it’s decided, it’s statutory; no one has any energy to increase it.

“Even when election doesn’t maintain, that won’t result in the extension of the tenure of the present President. The structure is evident about what occurs if election doesn’t maintain. Having mentioned that, there isn’t any purpose why election shouldn’t maintain in Nigeria. The state of affairs we now have within the South-East now is just not as dangerous as what we had within the North-East in 2015 and elections held efficiently then. So, it’s doable to isolate specific zones and areas the place there could also be violence for election to carry in different areas the place there may be peace and when there’s a return of peace, we will all the time return to conduct elections in these locations.

“The time lag for transition is so elongated within the structure that no one can use that (South-East state of affairs) to start a third-term agenda for the present President. It is not going to work. Let INEC not promote that dummy to anyone. Whether or not there are fifth columnists inside this regime which might be being paid to go and orchestrate violence within the South-East by burning INEC workplaces and whether or not even INEC headquarters in Abuja is burnt down, this present regime will expire in 2023!

“No Jupiter can lengthen that tenure! So, if anyone is doing that for the aim of getting any unlawful extension, they need to higher have a rethink as a result of Nigerians is not going to settle for it. We is not going to settle for an extension of the tenure of this regime, we is not going to settle for a army rule; we is not going to settle for something that may elongate this wickedness, struggling and violence! And it isn’t a brand new factor for us to demand that the tenure of this regime ought to finish; if the President is not going to reward us with good governance, at the least he can reward us with integrity by sticking to the oath that he took on the twenty ninth of Might 2019 when he was sworn in for second time period.”

Adegboruwa added that there isn’t any provision for being sworn in for third time period, both by extension or failure to conduct election.

“So, for me, Nigerians are prepared; we’re not blind individuals and we’re not daft. No matter is happening within the South-East, by way of INEC workplaces, all these press conferences that the INEC Chairman is holding and sending warnings, he’s solely warning himself; it doesn’t concern us as Nigerians. No matter occurs, this specific Muhammadu Buhari regime will come to an finish in 2023. That concept (tenure extension) can’t maintain water, no one ought to promote it, no one ought to dream about it, we is not going to settle for it as a nation,” he added.
