FG shuts down AITEO operations in Bayelsa over oil spill

The Federal Authorities has ordered the shutdown of an oil spill website in Santa Barbara, Nembe Native Authorities Space of Bayelsa State.

The Nationwide Oil Spill Detection and Response Company via the Federal Ministry of Setting requested the oil firm to cease its operations till a correct investigation is carried out and sufficient measures put in place to make sure the protection of lives and property within the space.

The directive is contained in an announcement signed by the Director, Press and Public Relations on the Federal Ministry of Setting, Saghir el Mohammed.

A large oil spill occurred at Properly 1, Properly Head, owned by AITEO Japanese Exploration and Manufacturing Firm Restricted (AEEPCo) and positioned on the Southern Area of Sant Barbara exploration firm, in Opu Nembe Group on November 5, 2021.

Following the incident, the federal authorities constituted a Joint Investigation Group (JIT) comprising the Nationwide Oil Spill Detection and Response Company (NOSDRA), Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Fee (NUPRC), Bayelsa State Ministry of Setting, Group representatives and Aiteo Japanese Exploration and Manufacturing Firm to instantly tackle the state of affairs.

”Consequently, the JIT directed AEEPCo to close within the impacted asset (properly head) for applicable oil II response. Accordingly, AEEPCo deployed booms and skimmers to comprise the spill crude oil from spreading.

”In an effort to safeguard the surroundings and livelihood, workers from the NOSDRA’s Yenagoa Area Workplace have been deployed to the location to observe and provides a progress report on the measures being taken to deal with the difficulty,” it stated.

The assertion stated 3000 barrels of emulsified crude oil have already been recovered and held in a restoration barge whereas extra booms have been deployed by the Clear Nigeria Associates, a Tier II response (CNA) System to work with the on-site restoration contractor.

In the meantime, to ensure security in its future operations, NOSDRA has mandated AITEO to hold out concrete actions to deal with the state of affairs, together with clean-up of impacted areas, remediation of spill websites in addition to harm evaluation and post-spill affect evaluation.
